Hematuria is blood in the urine. There are two types of blood in the urine that exist. Gross Hematuria: Blood that can be seen in the urine, and Microscopic Hematuria: Blood that cannot be seen in the urine. Hematuria can be caused by menstruation, vigorous exercise, viral illness, trauma, or infections, such as a urinary tract infection. Hematuria can also be caused by kidney or bladder cancer, blood clots, and sickle cell disease.
Most individuals with microscopic hematuria don’t have any symptoms. People with gross hematuria have urine that is pink, red due to the presence of red blood cells. In most cases, individuals with gross hematuria do not have other symptoms other than pain in some occasions.
DiagnosisHematuria can be diagnosed with urinalysis, which is testing of a urine sample. Other tests that can be performed include:
- Blood test
- Biopsy
- Cystoscopy
- Kidney imaging tests
Hematuria is typically treated by treating its underlying causes. Diet and nutrition have not been shown to play a role in causing or preventing hematuria.
