Stephan L. Werner, M.D., F.A.C.S. is experienced in all phases of urologic care Dr. Werner’s special interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of urologic malignancies, (prostate, kidney, bladder and testis), Benign Prostatic Diseases and female urinary incontinence. He is experienced in the surgical treatment of prostate cancer as well as Radioactive Seed Implantation, (Brachytherapy), and Combined Therapy, and skilled in both endoscopic and shock wave treatment for urinary stones. Dr. Werner does all the brachytherapy, (seed implants), for the practice.
Dr. Werner established Werner – Francis Urology Associates LLC – MidAtlantic Urology Associates LLC., in 1971. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, he graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School with honors in Biology and Physics. He subsequently graduated from Clark University in Worcester, Mass in 1960 receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. He attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY, receiving his M.D. in 1964. He did his Internship, and Residencies in General Surgery and Urology at AECOM/Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, finishing in 1970 and subsequently entered practice in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
He became Board Certified in Urology, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1973. He is a member of the American Urologic Association, and the Washington Urologic Society, serving as President for 1991 – 1992.
Dr. Werner served on the faculty at Albert Einstein, and subsequently on the faculty of George Washington University School of Medicine, as an Assistant Clinical Professor, for many years. He is on the teaching faculty of the Washington Hospital Center Department of Urology, and the Prince George’s Hospital Internal Medicine residency. He served as an Advisor to Project Hope, teaching Urology in Guatemala. He was Chairman of the Department of Urology at Prince George’s Hospital Center from 1981 to 1994, and then became President of the Medical Staff. He also served on the Boards of Directors of Prince George’s Hospital Center and of Dimensions Healthcare System, its parent corporation. He served as an officer and President of the Washington Urologic Society. He was a founder and President of IATROsystems/Praxis Medical Systems and a founder, officer and director of urOKare, a urologic IPA. He is currently Director of Quality for the Metropolitan Ambulatory Urologic Institute, and MidAtlantic Mobile Lithotripsy. He is a founder and Past Chairman of MidAtlantic Urology Associates LLC, (MAUA). He is a Distinguished Faculty Member of the Consortium for Improvement of Erectile Function.
Dr. Werner is married to Dr. Ann Werner, a pediatrician in PG County. He has four grown children, Jeanine, an oncologist in Annapolis, MD, Justin, a toy designer & international manufacturing consultant, Julie, a hospital think-tank Project Manager and Jody, who is an international consultant specializing in internationalization of commercial computer programs. He has 7 grandchildren.
His hobbies include flying, tennis, and skiing, computers, travel and travel photography. He has had numerous one man shows and participates in several juried exhibits.
